About the Amharic Language

Dictionary Repertoires: Standard and comprehensive Amharic dictionaries often contain roughly 60,000+ distinct root words and terminologies.

Alphabet (Fidäl): Amharic uses an abugida script with 33 basic consonant characters. Because each character has 7 variations depending on the vowel attached, the writing system consists of over 200 distinct symbols.

Root System: Amharic relies heavily on triconsonantal roots (three-consonant combinations). By placing vowels in specific patterns and using prefixes and suffixes, a single root can generate a massive number of variations.

Gemination: The language utilizes consonant gemination (doubling or lengthening the sound of a consonant), which can completely change the meaning of an otherwise identically spelled word.
